Joan Carter, Board Member
Joan Carter is a retired teacher with the Gifted
and Talented Education (GATE) program in the Hayward Unified School District after a 35-year career. She also taught for three years at a Montessori School in Orinda. She has worked with
students from preschool to grade 8. She majored in Psychology and Comparative Literature, with minors in Philosophy and Music, at Gonzaga University in Spokane, Washington. She earned
her teacher credential from California State University Hayward.
Joan has been playing clarinet since seventh grade,
after a short stint with the alto sax. In 2006, she started playing bass clarinet also. She studied clarinet with Gene Roandelli. She plays with the East Bay
Symphonic Band, the Contra Costa Wind Symphony, the Castro Valley Chamber Orchestra, and the Temple Hill Symphony Orchestra. She is a
member of the Association of Concert Bands and the Sacramento Traditional Jazz Society.
When not involved with music, Joan enjoys time with her family, swimming,
hiking, traveling, and listening to jazz. She lives in Orinda with her husband George and frequently sees her two adult daughters who live in San Francisco.
