The Las Gallinas Valley Sanitary District Non-Marching Band, affectionately known as The Sewer Band, was formed in 1957 by Joseph Curatilo, Director of Music for the Dixie School District, and six other residents of San Rafael. Their common denominator was the connection of their home to the same sewer district. One member was disabled and unable to march, so the band used a flatbed truck for parades and still does. Today, the band presents annual Spring and Holiday Concerts. In addition, the band can be heard throughout Marin County at various local events including the Marin County Fair.
